Abstract

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, British colonialism, modern education, and the expansion of the printing press in the Indian subcontinent provided women with their first opportunity to write at a public level. The novels written by women during this period were not merely reformist narratives; rather, they reflected the clash between the colonial system, indigenous traditions and modern ideas. This research study analyzes pre-1947 novels written by women from a postcolonial perspective and seeks to determine how women novelists of this era represented issues of gender, religion, class and nation in their texts. The analysis, conducted in light of postcolonial theories, reveals that through these novels, women challenged both colonial and patriarchal discourses while shaping concepts of identity, education, and autonomy. Thus, these novels became the earliest voices of resistance and self-expression in literature and provided a foundation for later women’s writing.
